Why We Built Australia's Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Weber Kettle Grills and Charcoal Grates

If you've ever spent hours trying to bring an old Weber kettle grill back to life, you're not alone.

Rust, burnt-on grease, warped charcoal grates, endless scrubbing with steel wool, soaking in vinegar, attacking it with a wire brush on a drill... I've tried every trick under the sun. Sometimes you'd get the grill looking respectable, but it never stayed that way for long.

Eventually I asked myself a simple question:

Why am I spending more time cleaning my grill than cooking on it?

That question eventually led to the creation of our Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Kettle Grills and Charcoal Grates.

The Search for a Better Weber Kettle Grill

When I started looking for a stainless steel replacement grill for my Weber kettle, there weren't many options.

Weber offers a heavy duty stainless steel cooking grill on some of their premium kettles, but they aren't available as a standalone upgrade for most owners. Unless you're replacing a damaged part under spare parts availability, buying just the upgraded grill isn't really an option.

There were a handful of stainless steel grills available from the United States, but once shipping was added, the cost became difficult to justify.

So rather than settle, I decided to build what I wanted.

It Started With the Charcoal Grate

The charcoal grate was always the weakest link.

After repeated cooks, the standard grates would rust, warp and eventually refuse to sit flat on the kettle supports. Every cook became a battle to keep charcoal baskets level and maintain even airflow.

I designed our first prototype stainless steel charcoal grate and sent it to Ollie from Ollie's Q.

I knew I simply didn't have enough cooking hours available to properly torture test it. Ollie absolutely did.

And that's exactly what he did.

After countless cooks and plenty of abuse, the feedback was exactly what we'd hoped for:

  • No warping
  • No rust
  • Consistent performance every cook
  • One less thing to worry about

That gave us the confidence to manufacture a full production run, and they quickly became one of our most popular Weber kettle upgrades.

Then Came the Heavy Duty Cooking Grill

Once the charcoal grate was sorted, attention turned to the cooking grill.

We originally launched a solid heavy duty stainless steel grill.

The response was fantastic, and keeping them in stock quickly became the biggest challenge.

But I still wasn't completely satisfied.

As someone who cooks on a Weber kettle regularly, I wanted options that actually solved real problems.

The Large Fuel Access Flap

One thing that always frustrated me was adding charcoal during a long cook.

Many Weber cooking grills with hinged flaps have relatively small openings. They work, but once the grill is hot and your food is cooking, trying to pour charcoal through a tiny opening can become frustrating.

Charcoal ends up bouncing everywhere.

Some lands on your food.

Some misses the charcoal basket entirely.

Then you're reaching for tongs to rearrange everything while trying not to overcook dinner.

Because our Stainless Steel Offset Plate had already become one of our most popular products, we designed a single large opening flap that lines up perfectly with it.

Adding fuel is faster, cleaner and far less stressful during a cook.

The Centre Removable Grill

Not everyone cooks the same way.

That's why we also designed a centre removable cooking grill.

This version pairs perfectly with our Krispy Kone, allowing easy access for direct charcoal cooking while maintaining the strength of the surrounding grill.

Some people have asked why we didn't combine the removable centre with hinged flaps.

The answer is simple.

Doing both would have resulted in very small fuel flaps, bringing us straight back to the problem we were trying to solve in the first place.

Rather than compromise both designs, we built two dedicated options so you can choose the one that best suits your style of cooking.

Built to Last

Every one of our heavy duty kettle grills is made from 6mm solid stainless steel rod.

These aren't pressed wire grills that are stamped out by the thousands.

Every rod is individually welded.

The outer rings are hand rolled.

Support bars are welded into position.

Every weld is cleaned and finished by hand.

There's an enormous amount of time invested into every single grill before it reaches your kettle.

The result is a grill that's designed to outlast the barbecue itself.

Designed Around Real BBQ Accessories

Compatibility mattered from day one.

We designed our grills to work seamlessly with our Smash Plates, ensuring the support bars are positioned so the plates fit correctly while still remaining compatible with a standard Weber kettle setup.

If you already own our accessories or plan to expand your setup later, everything is designed to work together.

Are They Expensive?

Yes.

There's no point pretending otherwise.

Hand-built stainless steel products simply take time.

When every grill bar needs welding, every outer ring is rolled by hand, every support bar is positioned individually and every weld is cleaned before shipping, there's a significant amount of labour involved.

That labour is reflected in the price.

But they're also a classic buy once, cry once investment.

Unlike standard plated steel grills that eventually rust, warp and require replacing, these are designed to be the last cooking grill and charcoal grate you'll ever buy for your Weber kettle.

If you're tired of replacing rusty grills every few years, stainless steel quickly starts to make sense.
